President urges private
universities to create opportunities for rural
students

President Zillur Rahman today urged the
authorities of the country's private
universities for creating opportunities
of higher education to the students who
reside in villages.
"Majority of the country's people are
being deprived from higher education as
guardians of rural areas are incapable
to afford the educational expenses for
their children in the private
universities," the President said while
addressing the 5th convocation of BRAC
University at Bangabandhu International
Conference Center. |

A total of 1,749 students, of them 1,161
and 588 were conferred undergraduate and
postgraduate degrees at the convocation
while Nubaha Mahbub and Matthew James
Reeve were awarded Chancellor's gold
medal for their outstanding academic
results.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid
attended the convocation as special
guest while Martha Alter Chen, a
lecturer in public policy at the Harvard
Kennedy School of the USA was
convocation speaker.
President of BRAC University Governing
board Sir Fazle Hasan Abed and Vice
Chancellor of the university Prof Dr
Jamilur Reza Choudhury also spoke on the
occasion.
President Zillur Rahman said all
universities, through their academic
activities, would have to prove that
they are not
lagging behind in providing quality
education as per the international
education standard.
Terming the universities as the centers
of excellence, the President said
university authorities should ensure
that
educational activities would not remain
in merely text-based lesson.
Zillur Rahman said different applied
subjects suitable for the 21st century
need to be incorporated in the
universities'
educational curriculum along with basic
subjects of arts, commerce and science.
Appreciating the BRAC University for
conducting some modern and applied
subjects related to bio-technology and
information technology, the President
hoped that that such new subjects would
play significant role in building
'Digital Bangladesh' along with the
development of rural economy.
Congratulating the new graduates, the
President said they would have to
utilize the immense potentials of
Bangladesh with their wisdom, talents
and intelligence.
President Zillur Rahman hoped that new
graduates would truly contribute in the
welfare of the country's mass people
imbued with humanity, patriotism and
spirit of the great war of liberation.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid
said the present government is
relentlessly working for ensuring
quality education at all private
universities.
The government is formulating Private
University Act 2010 for bringing
transparency and accountability of the
private
universities, he said.
The Minister said the government would
provide all-out support to the private
universities, which would be able to
maintain the government criteria to
provide the quality education.
Fazle Hasan Abed said the university has
tried to provide the best possible
post-graduate education to the students
for developing and creating analytical
minds of the students to understand of
the values of disciplines and hard
works.
Prof Dr Jamilur Reza Chowdhury said the
university has plan to expand the range
of academic programmes to offer degrees
in tune with contemporary requirements. |
