Six-day Int symposium on climate change begins Aug 25

A six-day international symposium on 'Climate change and food security in South Asia' will be held here from Aug 25 to 30.

The symposium is jointly organized by the Dhaka University and the Ohio State University, USA with the support of the government, World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and United Nation's Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UNESCAP).

President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed is expected to inaugurate the symposium and the Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed to conclude it.

In this regard, a coordination meeting on preparation of the symposium was held at the Bangabhaban today. President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed, who is the chief patron of the symposium presided the meeting.

Vice Chancellor of the Dhaka University Dr M A Fiaz, coordination of the symposium professor AHM Mustafizur Rahman of Soil science Department of DU, Secretaries of the Ministries of Agriculture, Health and Family Welfare, Education, Foreign Affairs, Environment and Forest, Science and ICT and high officials of other concerned ministries attended the meeting.

Secretary of the President's Office Md Sirajul Islam, Military Secretary to the President Major General Mohammad Ruhul Amin and President's Press Secretary Abdul Awal Howlader were also present on the occasion.

President Prof Iajuddin appreciated the efforts of the Dhaka University to organize such an international symposium and also thanked the concerned ministries for their cooperation.

He said the findings from the symposium would help the south Asian countries to protect environment as well as to ensure food security and safe drinking water for their people.

So far, Dr Fiaz said, 240 environment, agriculture and soil science experts from home and abroad have registered to join the symposium.

Sixty to Sixty-five different research papers on adaptation and mitigation of climate change as well as address the food security issue would be presented at the symposium, he added.

The symposium is going to organize as the continuation of the paper on 'Bangladesh: Problems of Global warming, Land Inundation and Arsenic Poisoning' which was presented by the President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed at the Ohio State University during his USA visit last November, Bangabhaban source said.
