President for further strengthening relations with Maldives

The first ever High Commissioner of the Maldives to Bangladesh Dr Abdul Samad Abdullah today presented his credential to President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed at Bangabhaban here.

Welcoming the new envoy, the President said Bangladesh attaches importance to her brotherly relations with Maldives as the two countries have been working together at various international and regional platforms including SAARC.

The President recalled the contribution of the Maldives' President

Mamun Abdul Gayoom to strengthen SAARC since its inception and invited him to visit Bangladesh during his convenient time.

Mentioning Bangladesh's fame in producing different quality products for international market including readymade garments, medicine, jute and leather goods and melamine, he said the people of Maldives could be benefited by using Bangladeshi products. 

He also said Maldivian students could take the opportunity to take higher study in the universities in Bangladesh including Dhaka University.

He requested envoy to put his efforts towards taking initiatives to increase cooperation between Bangladesh and Maldives in various fields, particularly sharing experience in development and expansion of tourism sectors and boosting the existing volume of trade between the two countries.

The new High Commissioner of Maldives expressed his satisfaction over the present deep brotherly relations between Bangladesh and the Maldives.

He also said that he would take his initiatives to strengthen bilateral trade and economic cooperation between Dhaka and Malay further and import Bangladeshi products for the benefit of Maldivian people.

The Maldivian High Commissioner also expressed his gratitude to Bangladesh for its assistance for Tsunami affected people in 2004.

Secretary of the President's Office Md Sirajul Islam, Foreign Secretary Touhid Hosain, Military Secretary to the President Major General Mohammad Ruhul Amin, Acting Foreign Secretary MAK Mahmud and Press Secretary Abdul Awal Howlader were present.

Earlier, on his arrival at Bangabhaban, a smart contingent of President's Guard Regiment gave the High Commissioner a guard of honor.
