DHAKA -Bangladesh today rolled out the red carpet as Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena arrived here on a three-day official visit amid a warm and ceremonial welcome.

President Md. Abdul Hamid and senior ministers in the cabinet received the Sri Lankan leader as a 21 gun salute heralded his arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) International Airport, as part of the state ceremony meant for VVIPs.

Two children named Namira and Saad presented bouquet to the Sri Lankan President as he descended from a special aircraft of Sri Lankan Airlines, also carrying his entourage comprising ministers, state ministers, deputy ministers and business community members.

The craft touched down the airport at 11:18 am.

Finance minister AMA Muhith, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam accompanied President Hamid in receiving his Sri Lankan counterpart.

The Bangladesh President escorted Sirisena to a makeshift dais as a joint contingent of army, navy and air force offered him an honour guard.

After the ceremony, the Sri Lankan President left the airport for the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel where he will be staying during his visit, according to the programme schedule.

The visiting Sri Lankan President will make a courtesy call on his counterpart at Bangabhaban tomorrow evening and will attend a dinner and cultural function to be hosted by President Hamid. As part of state rituals, the Sri Lankan president will also sign a visitors' book at the Credential Hall of the Presidential palace.
