The President said this while addressing the
inaugural session of a two-day celebration
of the Four Decades of Pharmacy Education
organized by the Faculty of Pharmacy of
Dhaka University at Hotel Sheraton here.

Dr SMA Faiz presided over the session.
Health Secretary AKM Zafar Ullah Khan,
Education Secretary Mohammad Momtazul Islam,
University Grants Commission Chairman
Professor Nazrul Islam, president of the
celebration organizing committee Professor
Dr Nurun Nahar Rahman and Secretary
Professor Dr Md Abdur Rashid spoke on the
occasion.
A citation was also read out in the session
to pay homage to Professor Emeritus Dr Abdul
Jabbar, a former head of the department of
pharmacy of the DU, for his outstanding
contribution to the development of pharmacy
education and pharmaceutical sector in the
country.
Describing the pharmaceutical industries as
one of potential sectors of the country,
President Iajuddin said the market of
pharmaceutical goods has expanded globally
with the local products contributing US$
27.54 million to the country's export
earning in 2006.
"This is the right time to make our position
stronger in the international medicine
market and expand it further. We have to
utilize unitedly the vast untapped
potentials of pharmaceutical industry," he
added.
Professor Iajuddin laid emphasis on
developing skilled manpower, ensuring
quality management, maintaining
international standard of medicine and
controlling quality to expand the
pharmaceutical sector in the country.
He also underscored the need for setting up
an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API)
park to ensure smooth supply of raw
materials.
The President expressed the hope that all
concerned would extend their cooperating
hands to flourish the country's
pharmaceutical sector and ensure an expanded
international market for the medicine
produced in Bangladesh.
He also reminded the role of the country's
pharmacists in maintaining quality of the
pharmaceutical products and developing the
sector.
