President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed today said the education system at the universities has to be rearranged radically in such a way so that the graduates could make the outlook of the country widened and develop knowledge.

The President said this while addressing the 44th convocation of the University of Dhaka at its playground here.

Language veterans Abdul Matin and Gaziul Haque were conferred on honorary Doctors of Laws for their great contribution to the language movement, the struggle for independence and the war of liberation at the convocation.

Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Dr SMA Faiz and Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr AFM Yusuf Haider spoke on the occasion.

Language veteran Abdul Matin was the convocation speaker.

The President said the success and reputation of a university depends on its students and teachers. The works and
research carried out by the teachers expand the horizon of a university while the depth of knowledge of the students is the evidence of excellence of a university, he added.

"The prime objective of the universities is to create a great number of knowledge seekers," he said.

Dr Iajuddin said many changes have been brought in the traditional system of education at the universities to create qualified people who are able to make the country and the society sustainable.

"With the advancement of knowledge they always keep up with the world by expanding their own dominion of thoughts and ideas," he said He said institutional recognition encourages a person to be responsible and dutiful.

"The responsibility to his own soul, family and society that ultimately makes one responsible to the country and the nation," he added.

Expressing his concern over session jam at the public universities, the President said, the session jam increases educational expenditure, and lingers the educational life of the students as well as wastes huge working hours.

He also called upon all including students and teachers, guardians, members off the civil society and national political leaders to think about the ways on how to solve the problem.

President Iajuddin hoped that everyone would remain active and inspired in their respective fields to discharge their specified responsibilities.

He said public universities should take some steps so that the people of the country would not be deprived, as a large part of their money to the national exchequer is being spent for the universities.

In this regard, Professor Iajuddin suggested that the guardians should be included side by side with the teachers, students, officials and employees in running the public universities.
