President appreciates contribution of Rotary to nation- building activities

Visiting President of Rotary International Wilfried J Wilkinson paid a curtsey call on President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed at Bangabhaban here today.

Welcoming the Rotary global president, Professor Iajuddin Ahmed appreciated contributions of this international voluntary organization to various nation-building activities undertaken by the government and different organizations in the country.

He also praised the Rotary International's humanitarian and disaster relief programmes for the distressed people as well as its active

cooperation to the victims of different natural disasters like the cyclone Sidr and other activities in health and education sectors in Bangladesh.

The activities the president specially mentioned included Rotary's pioneering role to set up Cancer Hospital, prevent
polio, mitigate arsenic, build law-cost cyclone centres, expand non-formal education, impart vocational training and establish new schools side by side with undertaking different awareness building programmes.

President Iajuddin Ahmed apprised the Rotary President of Bangladesh's achievement in attaining Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) of the UN, particularly in the fields of primary education, women empowerment, sanitation and reducing child and mother mortality rates.

Wilfried J Wilkinson also apprised the President of various humanitarian and development activities of the Rotary and its different programmes in Bangladesh.

"Rotary International is one of the major partners of the government in its polio vaccination drive, contributing a total
of Taka 150 crore to the programme," he said.

Describing poverty and illiteracy as worldwide problems, Wilfried J Wilkinson lauded Bangladesh's achievement in
alleviating poverty, reducing illiteracy, empowering women and developing human resources.

Military Secretary to the President Major General Mohd Aminul Karim, Secretary of the President's Office Md Sirajul Islam, Press Secretary Abdul Awal Howlader and District Governor of Rotary International, Bangladesh Rafiq Ahmed Siddique were present.
