The activities the president specially
mentioned included Rotary's pioneering role
to set up Cancer Hospital, prevent
polio, mitigate arsenic, build law-cost
cyclone centres, expand non-formal
education, impart vocational training and
establish new schools side by side with
undertaking different awareness building
programmes.
President Iajuddin Ahmed apprised the Rotary
President of Bangladesh's achievement in
attaining Millenium Development Goals (MDGs)
of the UN, particularly in the fields of
primary education, women empowerment,
sanitation and reducing child and mother
mortality rates.
Wilfried J Wilkinson also apprised the
President of various humanitarian and
development activities of the Rotary and its
different programmes in Bangladesh.
"Rotary International is one of the major
partners of the government in its polio
vaccination drive, contributing a total
of Taka 150 crore to the programme," he
said.
Describing poverty and illiteracy as
worldwide problems, Wilfried J Wilkinson
lauded Bangladesh's achievement in
alleviating poverty, reducing illiteracy,
empowering women and developing human
resources.
