Visiting Administrator of the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) Kemal Dervis today
called on President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed
at Bangabhaban here.
During the meeting the President thanked UNDP
for its continued support in different projects
for strengthening democracy and socio- economic
development of the country.
He also expressed
satisfaction at the UNDP's role in Bangladesh in
the areas of democratic governance and human
rights, comprehensive disaster management,
poverty alleviation, reduction of vulnerability
and gender mainstreaming.
He said Bangladesh has already achieved some of
the eight millennium development goals (MDGs)
set by the UN including gender priority in
school enrolment and access to safe drinking
water.
Professor Iajuddin briefed the UNDP
Administrator about the present food stock in
Bangladesh and sought the UN cooperation to meet
the situation.
The President mentioned that Bangladesh is going
through a critical juncture in consolidating its
democratic institutions, improving good
governance and checking corruption.
He also thanked the UNDP for its assistance to
the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) in
preparing voter list with photographs.
President Iajuddin also recognized that UNDP's
support has been critical in implementing the
election roadmap announced by the EC and holding
the next general election in a free, fair and
credible manner by December this year.
He also emphasized Bangladesh's important and
visible engagement in promoting peace and
security in conflicting areas in the world
contributing more than 9,500 peacekeepers in UN
peacekeeping mission at present.
The UNDP Administrator express satisfaction at
the development, Bangladesh achieved
particularly in women empowerment, attaining
different MDGs, disaster management and
preparation of voter ID card.
He hoped that the next general election will
take place according to roadmap which would help
make stable democracy in the country.
Kemal Dervis who is also Under Secretary General
of the UN, stressed on strengthening the
democratic, judiciary and financial institutions
in the country to flourish democratic culture.
He also praised the Bangladeshi peacekeepers
working at the UN peacekeeping missions in
different countries.
UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Ms Renata
Lok Dessallien and Director and chief of Staff
of UNDP Tegengework Gettu were present.
Military secretary to the President Major
General Mohd Aminul Karim, Secretary Md Sirajul
Islam and Press Secretary Abdul Awal Howleder
were present.
