Newly appointed US envoy presents credential to Iajuddin

Newly appointed Ambassador of the United States of America (USA) to Bangladesh James Francis Moriarty today presented his credential to President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed at Bangabhaban here.

Welcoming the Ambassador, the President hoped that the relations between Dhaka and Washington would be deepened further during his tenure in Bangladesh.

He said Bangladesh greatly values its close and friendly relations with the US.


He also laid importance on further strengthening the bilateral cooperation between the two countries in all areas of
mutual interest.

Professor Iajuddin gave a brief description about the efforts of the present government towards strengthening democracy in the country, reform in different democratic institutions, countering terrorism, curbing corruption and holding a free and fair election by December this year.

The President also apprised the US envoy of religious harmony prevailing in the country.

He also thanked the US government for its assistance in rescue and relief operations conducted for the cyclone-Sidr
survivors in the southern part of the country and post-cyclone rehabilitation programmes.

President Iajuddin also expressed his satisfaction at the bilateral trade, investment, transfer of technology, development cooperation and education and training, immigration and people to people contact between the two countries.

He requested the US government for debt waiver, reschedule the loan in the Tropical Forest Conservation Act (TFCA) for forestation in the coastal belt and enhancing food aid.

The US envoy praised the government efforts towards strengthening democratic process in the country, checking terrorism and curbing corruption, and hoped that the next general elections would be held in line with the road map announced by the Election Commission.

He praised Bangladesh's achievements in developing human resources and attaining millennium development goals (MDGs) in different sectors.

The envoy also expressed satisfaction at the existing cordial and friendly relations between the two countries and
hoped that the bilateral cooperation in different fields between Dhaka and Washington would be strengthened further in the days to come.

Francis Moriarty praised the religious harmony prevailing in Bangladesh and applauded Bangladesh's contribution in the UN Peacekeeping Mission.

Military Secretary to the President Major General Mohd Aminul Karim, Secretary Md Sirajul Islam, Foreign Secretary Touhid Hossain and Press Secretary to the President Abdul Awal Howlader were present.

Earlier, on his arrival at Bangabhaban, a smart contingent of the President's Guard Regiment gave guard of honour to the US Ambassador.
